100 Miles West of Spokane

i ain't ever been to spokane
looks bad as the sun goes down
it's cold.
dusk.
sandwiches made on top of the backpack standing on eastern
washington state desert ramp.
no, it doesn't look good.
just as i'm mumbling, "vettes never pick you up," this one does.
we cram my stuff in somehow. this guy is cool. he's a professional skier.
he's into metal. you wouldn't expect a ride from his type driving this car.
he's removed the rear window and wedged a big boombox in the
space. american metal thrusts us eastward into
"the great american night."
i look out the non-window over
the tail of the stingray to see stars high in the clear-dark desert night.
no cars behind us.
after a while there are trees.
i know this because they are silhouetted by an amazing red light on the horizon.
the music has switched to CSNY and
as neil young is singing abut a yellow moon on the rise the moon
has risen above the trees and turned from red to yellow.
i point this out to the driver.
it's a good ride as he drops me on the far side of spokane.
sleep in the dirt next to a furniture distributor.
